Mecca

Today is the first day of the pilgrimage to Mecca for muslims, called Hajj, which takes place annually. It is a mandatory religious duty that must be done at least once in a lifetime, by adults.

Mecca, 1887

The Kaabah (house of God) - where the Hajj takes place - was said to have been first built by Prophet Adam (peace be upon him). In the Holy Quran though, it is traced back to prophet Abraham (peace be upon him). Performing Hajj was later established by prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

Mecca Pilgrimage, 1954

Hajj takes place in the last month of the Islamic calendar and every year, about two to three million people from around the world journey to Mecca to perfrom it. It is the largest single gathering of people on the planet.

The Kaabah can be visited all year round but it is not mandatory. That pilgrimage is called Ummra.

Unfortunatly I've never done either. It's funny how it's so easy to plan to travel for the holidays but so hard to plan to go to Mecca when it's just a few hours away. I really have to set my priorities straight.

Anyway, here are some supplications that you can say during this time:

  1. Yes :( Insha’Allah we will be able to go soon. I want to know the feeling...because just looking at photographs or videos of The Kaabah makes me want to cry.
